I know a number of us have been archiving threads from the old Mod Forums, both before and since the move.
redwoodtreesprite has a thread going and seems to be archiving mainly TESC-related tips --->Archiving Threads, List and Looking for Archivers. Check this thread to see what has already been saved on redwoodtreesprite's site. Since the move, I have been trying to pull more useful and interesting mod threads off the old mod forums before they are gone. I have the impression that many threads are already no longer available. The fact is there are not enough hours due to the usual other commitments that we all face. So I am asking for some help in order to retain as many valuable threads as possible. I suggest archiving the threads is the priority. We can swap them around between ourselves and get them posted somewhere at a more leisurely pace but they need archiving NOW. I have been using the method suggested by DinkumThinkum in this thread: QUOTE If you're using Internet Explorer (don't know about other browsers) why not just use 'File | Save As'? That gives you options for saving the current web page as a text file or in a couple of different HTML formats. I usually use MHT, since that saves the whole thing in a single file, along with the icons, etc. Text works too, if that's all you want. Just make sure you have the whole thread displayed before saving: if it's more than one page, click the 'All' link to get the whole thread at once. Proposal: 1. As many folk as possible start archiving now, in MHT format ,those threads that they deem to be useful. If 'everyone' does a couple it will take no time at all and it will save what's left of the electronic mod information library. [Note: The old links do not work. You have to re-search. Not all user names are there anymore either.] 2. As we archive a thread we post it here - simply exact title and what it is about as they are often not the same thing - including what we already have saved. Author's or thread originator's name if relevant and possible. [Hypothetical example: "Alien butt plugs" - cleaning savegame with TESAME.] There will be some duplication but a quick scroll through this thread should indicate what does not need doing again. 3. We use PMs to request a copy from someone else based on the posts here and as consolidated pages are developed we also post them here as redwoodtreesprite is already doing in her TESC-related thread. [The current emphasis though should be on collection, not distribution] That's my suggested plan of how to deal with this uncertain situation. Any thoughts? Agreement? Help? Names and content of threads already saved? -------------------- |

I am able to lend add-free webspace, I just don't have much time or ability to make the pages. So if people can make the archives and put them to a html document (or whatever, I really don't know much of anything about that stuff) I can upload it to my space. I would be EXTREAMLY interested in hosting any and all information reguarding making buildings, landscapes, sities, lighting and such.

Not old threads, but I'm starting to put a reply on any of the threads here that I've archived. I think it's a good idea. If everyone does this, we'll know which of the good new threads have also been saved.
Oh, and as I have made a template for my archived threads pages, it usually takes only a minute or two per page to make. So if a thread has only a few paragraphs, I'll do it that way. Long threads I will save via the method described above... This post has been edited by redwoodtreesprite: Sep 11 2004, 12:15 AM -------------------- |

I have been archiving some threads, and I will try to pick up the pace, as I believe they will all dissapear at a time of 30 days from the last post to them. This is why so many are gone already. I will try to spend several hours this week-end working on archiving. EDIT: I have been just grabbing stuff that looked interesting, so I don't know what all I have yet. And unfortunately it is all in notepad format. I will switch to the other format and try to grab stuff that others havn't allready indicated that they have. Let me offer an operational suggestion:
Find the thread you want to archive, if it is more than one page long, click the SHOW ALL option. Scroll to the very bottom of the thread and in the lower right corner is a clickable option for PRINT. Select that and you get a reformatted COMPLETE thread that you can save in one click to anyplace you wish on your harddrive. If you save as WebPage complete, you get a nicely structured subfolder with any of the icons, images in a subfolder and the whole thread readable. I have done this with three of the threads of interest to myself. http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/ubb...ds.php?Cat=&C=5 = link to the all forums list. http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/pos...Cat=&Board=UBB7 link to the old mods forum http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/pos...tesconstsethelp link to the TESCS forum http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/pos...Cat=&Board=UBB4 link to the Lore Forum If you select the Show From all Dates option there will be 142 pages with 2827 threads in the mods forum. http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/pos...psed&sb=5&o=all last page with the locked old pinned threads. In the TESCS forum 45 pages with 895 threads. http://www.elderscrolls.com/ubbthreads/pos...psed&sb=5&o=all So very very much has been lost. |

Searches will get more threads, but so many have disappeared. Is everyone else getting this for the last threads in the Construction Set Forum when going backwards:
8/02.04, then ones for 7/05/04, 2/25/04, 2/12/04, 10/16/03, 10/02/03, and 9/26/03 If so, it looks like searches are the only way to access the other threads. If this is the case, I propose we pick areas to search, and post them here so the searches won't be duplicated. I'm going to start with ones related to making races, as that's an area I'm really into, creatures, fitting pieces together. bulding interior cells and interiors as exteriors. Also, ones relating to disappearing doors and NPCs. That should keep me busy for a while... This post has been edited by redwoodtreesprite: Sep 11 2004, 06:32 AM -------------------- |

I don't know if this is a good idea or not but perhaps you could put a out a blanket request for modders to re-post their most recent releases in this forum.
It might preserve a lot of the realease threads without having to go back and physically archive them yourself AND start making THIS forum a decent database worth searching. Of course that wouldn't get everyone but it might save some headaches. Just a crazy idea . . . . -S -------------------- *Official forum Pharlan*

This is the thread that led to Wakim's Game Improvements, LDone's Theif Enhanced Mods and many other things. If someone wants it PM me an email addy that will accept large attachments. It will probably have to be reformatted. |

OldeCow69, Eveeran_Knight - Thank you. I agree that we can consolidate what we have when everyone comes up for air.
Iudas- Now that is great news. That thread was thought lost. PMed you. By the way, Grumpy's Mod Installation Tutorial is now up, archived on Emma's site for the benefit of all. Thanks, Emma. -------------------- |

I have part but not all of one of my threads from August of last year on balancing Mercantile from the TESCS forum.....unfortunately it is only the first part, RL got in the way for a while last year and by the time I came back to the boards, the thread was ... in oblivion consorting with the Deadra of Economics. On the Balancing spells thread, I have emailed you the 20 pages I have of it, I think that is all there was except for a few bump posts. |

Progress update -
Since I started out to save every thread that was left on the General Construction Set forum, I have rescued 198 out of 500. I have about 300 to go. I am working from oldest to newest because the oldest ones are dissapearing first. I am doing about 40 a day to stay ahead of "The Oblivion Monster". I have also rescued 18 more threads from the Morrowind Mods forum. I am looking at about 100 threads a day there to stay ahead of the monster, but of corse many of those threads don't need to be preserved, so I am saving the ones which seem like they might have some potentually useful information in them that isn't already on the new forums, or that may not become available again. -------------------- Navonod Eveer - Eveeran Bright Knight
WIP - Garoloths Shack - Happy beginnings and sad stories. Combo mod with mysterys, quests, background stories, new races, character starting aids, companionable and romanceable NPCs, hidden treasures, children, a small new island, new birthsigns, new classes, MUCH new dialogue, and more. |

To me it feels more like after the sinking or sacking - picking up survivors or pawing through the rubble . . . meh. But the thought is appreciated. Business, o' ye collectors: I seem to have 'lost' the connection to Illuminated Order Mod Secrets - Official Post , nor do I have a saved copy. If anyone managed to save this, in whatever format, could you please let me know, by PM possibly, as I have need of it before we get to 'The Great Consolidation and Thread Market.' -------------------- |

O.K.,
I'm finished saving all the threads that were still in the General Construction Set forum as of the fifteenth of this month. Whew! What a marathon, there were hundreds of them. So I now have about 44MB of archived threads from that forum, plus quite a few from the Mods forum. Will take a rest, then figure out what to do with them. I am going to write them to a CD tomarrow, so they dont get lost. Long past my bedtime now. Night, all... zzzZZZ -------------------- Navonod Eveer - Eveeran Bright Knight

Just want to pop in and say that I am still willing to host/mirror any pages that you guys want. I would be especcially interested in anything to do with the building of homes/landmasses and general CS info, but I'll take anything. (as long as you don't mind everything starting with www.kwshipman.com )

Well, at midnight in the eastern time zone of the U.S.A. which I believe is 5 or 6 AM GMT tomarrow morning, the last threads on the old forums will die a silent death. If there is anything still there that you wish to preserve and havn't yet, you'd better grab it within the next few hours. Hopefully everything that might prove useful and that hasn't been replaced with something newer has been preserved, but it wouldn't hurt to take a final look as many popular threads were posted to on the last day of the old forums (August 31) and thus are still alive for this ONE LAST DAY.
LAST CALL, folks! Kiss the old forums goodbye, and all unsaved threads also. There are many fond memories there, and what I wouldn't give to have some of the valuable threads which were posted there in the past years safe on a CD. Oh, well... Goodbye, old friend, R. I. I wish that were true, but everything over 60 days old is gone (except for a handfull of special archived ones). And the rest will be gone. It is my understanding that we were given 30 days, and then either we would lose access or the threads would be gone. Even if they aren't removed en-mass or we don't lose access to them, they will disappear as they reach the 60 day age limit. At the moment you will find that all threads before August 02 of this year are gone, except for a chosen few which were apparently selected to be arxhived. So I reiterate, read them and grab them while you can, folks. -------------------- Navonod Eveer - Eveeran Bright Knight

My point was only that the threads are still there one just has to change one's viewing choice to see them. They could wipe-out the old forums at any time, but they haven't wiped a single thing since the changover....yet. |

Well, I would guess that any of us who were busy archiving are probably long done with that.
Would any of those folk who archived threads from the old forums care to post links to the sites where you may have made the archived threads available to others? It would be good if we could summarize these as a resource for others. -------------------- |

Eveeran_Knight - ditto and I am working on trying to find a permanent, usable home for them. Part of the reason I bumped up this old thread in fact. Good to see you around.
Glad it helped, Kellick Stormcrow. That is exactly why I would like to have this 'stuff' collected and organized on one or more publicly accessible sites. Preferably more than one because I think some redundancy is a good thing for the community, as all the recent download site outages well demonstrate. -------------------- |

It might be possible to write a script(s) to dump the database to file, but the file would be huge, and I don't like the chances of the Admins doing all that work.
The other issue is that we have a lot of stuff archived that's been deleted from their database already. Finally, a lot of the stuff in the database is rubbish which one wouldn't really want to keep for ever? -------------------- |

baratheon79 has generously agreed to host the archives of saved threads and will probably be back here to post links to it once we have the material uploaded and he has had a chance to sort it out.
For those folk who saved threads here is the upload information for the directory where baratheon79 asks that we upload them: Account info for uploading: FTP address: 65.254.51.50 (This is the static IP address of the host server) ftp:es-ftp@rpgmods.com User name: es-ftp@rpgmods.com Password: oblivion You will you need an FTP client programme; link ---> Uploading at RPG Mods Forums. So please, if you have material saved from the old forums, check in with baratheon79 and get it uploaded so we can all use it. Subsequently, we may want to look at duplicating these archives but for now at least, let's get it all organized and accessible in one place. And to baratheon79 - kudos for this community service and thanks for your help and support! -------------------- |

Do we have any guidelines for what material goes up, a prefered format, or avoiding duplication, or are we more interested in just getting the stuff up somewhere at this stage? For now, just getting the stuff up is the priority. As far as the format, Ronin49's archives are in .mht format, and redwoodtreesprite's are just standard html pages with an accompanying folder containing the images for each thread. Either way will work just fine. As far as "avoiding duplication" is concerned, since I'll be spending the next few days on what I've got so far, that shouldn't be a problem. I'll be actually glancing through each old thread myself anyway, to try to figure out which forum they came from, so they can be organized on the link page accordingly. Though, in the case of the ones from redwoodtreesprite, I'll have to make an educated guess based on the subject and content of the threads. I have 80-some files (over 3 Meg) of mostly construction set forum threads converted to Word documents that I would be happy to contribute to the cause, if I could figure out how. The threads have been edited by me to strip away everything except the poster's name and the post. In few cases, I eliminated entire posts that were off-topic or didn't advance the thread in a useful way. If it is deemed that this treatment would offend some of the original posters, then perhaps it would be better to keep them for my own use only. |

For now, I'm really only concerned about the archived threads from the old forum. For the moment, that's going to keep me busy for awhile with just what's been uploaded so far. Especially since I'm also trying to finish up my current mod project as well. One issue I ran into, however, is that I'm having to convert the .mht files into another format to make them more browser friendly. Sure, they load fine from my own hard drive, but I had problems getting them to load from the server. Once I have the page with all the links coded (I could just set everything up through the PHP-Nuke portal or my own forums, but I'm trying to keep it simple to put up elsewhere too), I'll probably also zip up the final product using 7zip and upload it so it can be put up elsewhere fairly easily. Well, we are about to achieve some duplication of sources for archived threads and material as we have just opened The Archives at Mythic Mods, primarily due to the contribution made by OldeCow69.
These are infant Archives at the moment - provisional, under construction and incomplete but open. Thanks to all the folk who have made saved threads and material available - much of it is yet to get uploaded and we are still hoping to collect those threads saved by a number of other folk. We too are finding some of the challenges a trifle tedious but the Archives are open and will get filled out as we work through some of the similar format and transfer issues with which Baratheon79 is dealing.
